To set up an institute for research on arid and semi-arid regions of Gujarat, the Gujarat Ecology Commission – GEC signed a MoU with Jacob Blaustein Institute of Desert Research, Israel in September 1993.
The institute functions in a modern earthquake resistant building, which houses Director and Deputy Director’s chambers, Administration and Finance office and Scientist’s rooms and scholars have been provided with well spacious common rooms.
GUIDE’s research activities are linked to the goal of developing it as a centre of excellence in the study of understanding and addressing ecological, environmental and social problems and/or issues and promoting sustainable development in arid and semi-arid regions of the state.
Gujarat Institute of Desert Ecology (GUIDE) was established in Bhuj on 1st May 1995 in accordance with the administrative sanction by Forests and Environment Department of Government of Gujarat. This is based on a Memorandum of Understanding signed between Gujarat Ecology Commission (GEC) and Jacob Blaustein Institute of Desert Research (JBIDR), Israel in September 1993. The mission of GUIDE is to catalyse the process of ameliorating hardships to human beings in desert ecosystems of Gujarat, following sound ecological principles and carefully using scientific knowledge, imaginative technology and capital. Having entered into 21st year of its establishment, GUIDE has been striving to understand various ecological issues of drylands in Gujarat, and attempting to address them through holistic approach.
