Terrestrial Ecology

Terrestrial Ecology Division is one of the Divisions in the Institute which was earlier known as “Dryland Division” from the inception of the Institute which is renamed as “Terrestrial Ecology Division” in the year 2011. The Division has sufficient expert manpower in various thematic areas to identify problem areas carry out research and developmental activities in the field of Terrestrial Ecology and Biodiversity, Sociology and allied areas of arid and semi-arid regions of Gujarat and adjoining states, using sound ecological principles and to evolve with appropriate solutions and management strategies with the help of applied research. From the inception of the Institute, the Division has been involved in developing benchmark database for Ecosystems and Biodiversity of Kachchh and Gujarat through continuous monitoring and assessment activities. The Division is also involved in dissemination of ideas and to create awareness generation and communication of ecological knowledge through publication of Books, Research articles, Booklets, Newspaper articles and Organizing Conferences, Seminars, Symposium and Workshop.

Presently, the division is involved in various areas of research and developmental activities which include;

  • Biodiversity (Flora and fauna) surveys in various parts of Gujarat.
  • Biodiversity Impact Assessment and Monitoring.
  • Developing Biodiversity Action Plan (BAP), Biodiversity Management Plan (BMP), Wildlife Conservation and Management Plan (WCMP), Microplan for forest villages and Forest Protection Plan (FPP).
  • Ecosystem based assessment includes forest, grassland, desert, coast and agricultural ecosystem.
  • Status Assessment of plant and animal species and its communities.
  • In-situ and Ex-situ Conservation of threatened species of plants and animals.
  • Behavioural Ecology and Animal Ecology
  • Medicinal plant survey and ethno-medicinal assessment.
  • Acting as a Technical Support Group (TSG) for Constitution of Biodiversity Management Committees (BMC) and Preparation of People’s Biodiversity Register (PBR) for Gram Panchayats.
  • Natural Resource Management and livelihood development.
  • Economic and ecological evaluation of natural resources.
  • Reclamation and Restoration of Grassland, Soil and Rann.
  • Climate Change Impact Assessment.
  • Third party evaluation of Environment, Watershed and CSR Projects.
  • Green Belt Development projects for various Clients.
